๐ Module 3 ยท Safety, Privacy & Digital Judgment
Four activities to make digital safety real for your family.
Spot scams in the wild, work through group chat scenarios, do a quick privacy checkup, and build a Safety Agreement you'll actually use.
๐ฃ
Spot the Scam
The biggest cybersecurity threat isn't hackers โ it's manipulation. Look at each scenario together and identify the red flags before you hit reveal.
๐ง
How to play: Read each scenario, discuss what feels off, then tap "Reveal the Red Flags" to see the full breakdown. Try not to peek before guessing!

โ ๏ธ Message Request ยท This person isn't following you
Before you reveal... What do you see?
List every red flag you can spot in this message. Try to find at least 5.
๐ฉ Red Flags โ All 6
Message Request from a stranger โ Instagram would never DM you about a prize from an account you don't follow
Fake account name โ "instagram_official_prizes" is not Instagram. The real Instagram handle is @instagram
You didn't enter anything โ You can't win a contest you never entered
Urgency tactic โ "Expires in 24 HOURS" is designed to stop you from thinking clearly
Sketchy URL โ "claim-insta-prize.com" is not Instagram's domain. Real companies use their own domain
"Enter your info" โ Any prize that asks for personal information first is harvesting data, not giving gifts
Discuss together
What would you do if you got this message? What would make it hard to resist clicking โ especially the urgency?

โ ๏ธ Unknown sender ยท Not in your contacts
Before you reveal... What do you see?
What feels off about this text? List every red flag you can find.
๐ฉ Red Flags โ All 5
Sender name typo โ "USP5-Delivery" has a 5 instead of an S. Scammers use near-identical names to fool you at a glance
Fake domain โ USPS's real website is usps.com. "usps-pkg-confirm.net" is not USPS โ it's a data-harvesting site
Generic package number โ Real tracking numbers are tied to actual shipments you'd recognize
Urgency again โ "Within 12 hours" is the same trick. Pressure = less thinking
Are you even expecting a package? โ If you didn't order anything, this is a 100% scam
Discuss together
These texts are designed to catch you on a busy day when you're not paying close attention. What's the safest thing to do if you get a text like this โ even if you ARE expecting a package?
Scam 3 of 4
๐ณ Impersonation Scam
"It's Me โ I Need Help"
A text from someone claiming to be a friend or family member. In a rush. Needs a favor.
๐ฌ MessagesUnknown Number
Saturday 3:44 PM
?
Unknown Number
Hey it's Grandma! I lost my phone and I'm using a friend's number. I'm in a little trouble and I really need your help
?
Could you buy me a $200 Amazon gift card and send me the code? I'll pay you back as soon as I'm home. Please don't tell your parents I asked, I don't want to worry them
3:45
Before you reveal... What do you see?
This one is sneakier because it's personal. What are the red flags? What makes this hard to spot?
๐ฉ Red Flags โ All 5
Unknown number โ If it's really grandma, you could call her actual number to verify. Scammers count on you not doing this
Gift cards = scam โ No legitimate emergency is solved with a gift card. This is the #1 sign of a scam, full stop
"Don't tell your parents" โ Any message that asks you to keep a secret from your parents is a red flag, always
Emotional manipulation โ The urgency + family connection is designed to make you act before you think
Sending a "code" โ Gift card codes are as good as cash. Once you send them, they're gone forever โ no bank can help you
For parents
This scam works on adults too โ even grandparents. Have you ever gotten a message like this? What's your family's rule for anything that asks you to keep a secret or send money?

โ ๏ธ This link may be unsafe ยท Discord Safety Warning
Before you reveal... What do you see?
Gaming scams target kids specifically because in-game currency feels very real. What are the red flags here โ including the "Jake_real" comment?
๐ฉ Red Flags โ All 6
Free in-game currency doesn't exist โ Epic Games and Roblox cannot give you V-Bucks or Robux through a third-party website. Period.
Fake bot account โ "BotHelper9000" is not affiliated with any game company. Anyone can make a Discord bot
Sketchy domain โ "free-vbucks-gen.io" has nothing to do with Epic Games, whose real site is epicgames.com
"Enter your username" โ This is the first step to account theft. Next they'll ask for your password
"Jake_real" is likely a bot too โ Fake testimonials in the same server are a classic trust-building scam tactic
Discord itself flagged it โ When the platform warns you, listen to the platform
For the kid
If a friend sent you this link, would that change how you'd think about it? What would you say to them?
๐ง
The pattern in every scam: Urgency + emotion + a sketchy link or request. If something makes you feel like you have to act right now โ that's exactly when you should slow down and check with an adult first.

Group Chat Case Studies
Read each scenario together, then work through the discussion questions. There are no right answers โ just honest conversation.
๐ญ
Ground rule before you start: These scenarios might feel familiar. If something comes up that's happened to you or someone you know, that's okay to share โ but nobody has to. The goal is understanding.

Which role did each person play โ initiator, amplifier, or bystander?
For the kid
If Marcus is in this chat and can see every message, what do you think he's feeling right now?
Everyone
Sofia and "Y" both pushed back. What made that hard to do? What would make it easier?
For the parent
What would you want your kid to do in this situation? Have you told them that?
๐ก Research note
Exclusion and mean comments are the two most common forms of cyberbullying among teens. One person speaking up changes the group norm โ even if the chat keeps going, it plants a seed.

For the kid
What's the pressure in this chat? Even though no one is being "mean" exactly โ is something wrong here?
Everyone
"You're gonna be the only one not there" โ what emotion is that designed to trigger? (Hint: you've seen this before in Spot the Hook...)
For the kid
How could "Y" respond in a way that holds their ground without making things super awkward?
For the parent
If your kid got this message, would they feel like they could tell you about it? What would make that easier?
๐ก The FOMO hook IRL
"Everyone will be there" and "you'll be the only one not there" are the same FOMO hooks we saw in apps โ just in a group chat. Recognizing the pattern gives you power over it.

Discussion Questions Talk it through
Everyone
28 people read this before anyone said "delete it." What do you think stopped people from speaking up sooner?
For the kid
Emma trusted Kayla with something private. When Kayla forwarded it, she broke that trust โ even if it seemed funny in the moment. Have you ever been on either side of something like this?
Everyone
Once something is in a group chat of 31 people, is there any way to actually "delete it"? What's the lesson here?
For the parent
What would you want your kid to do if they received this screenshot โ before forwarding it?
๐ก The screenshot rule
"Private" is an assumption, not a guarantee. Once something leaves your hands, you have zero control over where it goes. The screenshot test: would the person who sent this be okay with you forwarding it? If you're not sure โ don't.

Leo answered the school name question without thinking. What information had the group already given away by that point?
Everyone
"Y" said something feels off. What should happen next โ in the chat and in real life?
For the parent
Does your kid know that they're allowed to leave โ or report โ a chat that feels wrong, even if a friend added them? Have you talked about what to do if this happens?

Five minutes now could prevent a major headache later. Go through each section together โ phones out, settings open.

๐ฌ Yes, same for most

Section 5: Reflection
Last section โ and the most important. Take your time with these.
What was your biggest surprise from this audit?
What's one thing you're changing this week?
If something went wrong online โ account hacked, something scary in a group chat, a stranger making contact โ what's your family's plan?
โญ
Great work. Now head to Activity 3 to build your Family Safety Agreement โ where you'll make all of this official.
๐ค
Family Safety Agreement
This isn't a contract โ it's a conversation made concrete. Fill it out together, print it, and put it somewhere you'll actually see it.
๐ก
Do this together. Each section has a short discussion built in. The conversation matters more than filling every box perfectly.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Our Family's Digital Safety Agreement
We're making this agreement not because we don't trust each other โ but because we want to be a team when it comes to technology. This is our plan for staying safe, connected, and aligned.

๐ฌ Group Chat Agreement
How we handle group chats
Group chats have their own social pressure. Here's what we agree to do when things get complicated.
โ We can mute or leave chats that don't feel good
โ We won't pile on or amplify mean comments
โ If someone's targeted, we'll say something โ or tell an adult
โ We won't add people to chats without asking them first
Our group chat rule:
๐ When Something Goes Wrong
Our plan when something bad happens online
Talk through each scenario and fill in your family's answer.
If someone is mean to you online, you will...
If you see something online that scares or upsets you, you will...
If a stranger contacts you online, you will...
If a group chat goes somewhere uncomfortable, you will...
๐ Call Me If...
